How To Crochet a Granny Square Baby Lovey
These simple, yet beautiful crochet loveys make a perfect gift for the newest members of your family. Perfect for the beginner crocheter and those with more experience, they require just a few materials and the possibilities are endless with this quick and easy design. Follow along to make one, or a few, yourself!
Materials -
Crochet hook suitable for the weight of your yarn. I used a J hook.
Yarn - in any color or combination of colors you’d like. Scraps work well for these!
Scissors
Tapestry needle
Stitches Needed -
Magic Ring - MR
Slip Stitch - sl st
Chain - ch
Double Crochet - dc
Final size is completely up to you! This one measures 12x12 inches
Notes - I turn my project each round and work front side and back side as I found my rounds to twist. Switching back and forth corrects this for me and the way my stitches come out.
Rnd 1: In MR, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, [3 dc, ch 2] 3 times. Sl st to beginning of rnd. Pull tail of MR to tighten.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, turn, ch 1, 2 dc in space, ch 2, 3 dc in same space, 3 dc, ch 2 in next spaces and each of the corner spaces around. Sl st to beginning of round
Rnd 3 and on: repeat round 2 until desired size is reached.
Color Change Options - The color can be changed at any round you choose. Once you end a round with the slip stitch, cut your yarn with 6 inches of tail and pull through..
You can then start your new color in any space between the clusters of 3 dc. Pull your yarn through and sl st, ch 2, 2 dc in same space and continue as usual around with the 3 dc in each space, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner spaces.
Finishing - Once you’ve come to the desired size you are wanting, there are many ways to finish the edging on your crocheted lovey. I’ve landed on a simple, yet lovely scalloped edge design shown here.
Without switching colors, and finishing the last sl st to join the round, sl st in next stich, *4 dc in next space, skip one stitch, sl st in next stitch* repeat all around. At corners 6 dc in corner space.
Tie in all ends to finish. If your lovey finishes a bit wavy, a quick blocking with a steam iron will help. Just be sure it’s not too hot to melt older yarns.
These crochet loveys can be customized to your own color choice and style. Mix them up and have fun!
They make great gifts for baby showers and to add to baby gift baskets. A lovely little treasure they will cherish for years to come.
I’ve been creating these in my spare time to donate to Forget Me Not Baskets, a group that provides grief support, comfort and remembrance items to families who have experienced a loss during pregnancy or childbirth throughout Ohio and across the US. If you have free time and supplies just sitting there, consider making a few of these to donate to families experiencing these immense losses.
